The Milton United Way ended its 2016 by surpassing its goal of $1 million.  The total unveiled at a “touchdown” celebration March 24 broke through the $1 million mark at:  $1,002,312.

The celebration was held at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.  Guests were entertained by Jo Jo and the Chintos, and treated to food including pretzels, hotdogs, and cotton candy.  Member agencies were on-hand for recognition, and the announcement.

Milton United Way CEO Kate Holmes thinks it’s because of the agency’s transparency.  “We believe the increase in support is in large part due to the United Way Milton’s hard work to show donors how their dollars are making a measurable impact in the community,” Holmes said.  The funds raised go to 26 different agencies including: Acclaim Health, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Halton, and Milton Community Resource Centre.  They list specific programs on their website that are given funds.

The 2016 campaign co-chairs were Shawn and Bridget Saulnier.  “By giving so generously in 2016, Milton residents have shown their commitment to support ongoing, positive change in our community,” Bridget said.  The campaign featured events such as the Mayor’s Golf Tournament, and a silent auction put together by Enhance Spa.

It didn’t matter how much people gave. “It doesn’t matter how much you do, just do something according to your means,” Shawn added.  The campaign kept going until the last minute, with businesses holding events, and donations counted until right before the Touchdown event.

The United Way Circle of Women Who Care initiative came into its own as part of the fundraising driving.  It’s a group of community-minded women who meet on a monthly basis to learn and raise awareness of the organization’s agencies.  It’s considered a “leadership initiative” where women are asked to donate $1200/year.  “The increased funds will allow United Way to extend our impact in the community,” Holmes said.

The United Way of Milton has made the decision to amalgamate with the United Ways of Burlington, Halton Hills, Oakville, and Hamilton.  The change was voted on in May, 2016, and becomes effective April 1, 2017.  For more information on the programs funded visit: www.miltonunitedway.ca
